Ayatul Kursi || The Throne Verse – Surah Al-Baqarah 2:255

 Ayatul Kursi (آيَةُ ٱلْكُرْسِيِّ) also known as The Throne verse is the 255th verse of the 2nd chapter of the Quran Surah Al Baqarah 2:255 and is one of the most popular and widely read verse among Muslims all over the world because of its magnificence, its virtues as well as its benefits which we will describe further with the reference of Hadith of our Prophet (pbuh). 

So let's come to the verse.

    1.

    اللّٰهُ لَاۤ اِلٰهَ اِلَّا هُوَ الۡحَـىُّ الۡقَيُّوۡمُ 

    Allaahu laa 'ilaaha 'illaa Huwal-Hayyul-Qayyoom,

    Allah! There is none worthy of worship but He, the Ever Living, the One Who sustains and protects all that exists.


    2.

    لَا تَاۡخُذُهٗ سِنَةٌ وَّلَا نَوۡمٌ‌ؕ

    laa ta'khuthuhu sinatun wa laa nawm,

    Neither slumber nor sleep overtakes Him.


    3.

    لَهٗ مَا فِى السَّمٰوٰتِ وَمَا فِى الۡاَرۡضِ 

     lahu maa fis-samaawaati wa maafil-'ardh,

    To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth.


    4.

    مَنۡ ذَا الَّذِىۡ يَشۡفَعُ عِنۡدَهٗۤ اِلَّا بِاِذۡنِهٖ‌ؕ

    man thal-lathee yashfa'u 'indahu 'illaa bi'ithnih,

    Who is he that can intercede with Him except with His Permission?


    5.

    يَعۡلَمُ مَا بَيۡنَ اَيۡدِيۡهِمۡ وَمَا خَلۡفَهُمۡ‌ۚ

    ya'lamu maa bayna 'aydeehim wa maa khalfahum,

    He knows what happens to them in this world, and what will happen to them in the Hereafter.


    6.

    وَلَا يُحِيۡطُوۡنَ بِشَىۡءٍ مِّنۡ عِلۡمِهٖۤ اِلَّا بِمَا شَآءَ

    wa laa yuheetoona bishay'im-min 'ilmihi 'illaa bimaa shaa'a,

    And they will never compass anything of His Knowledge except that which He wills.


    7.

    وَسِعَ كُرۡسِيُّهُ السَّمٰوٰتِ وَالۡاَرۡضَ

     wasi'a kursiyyuhus-samaawaati wal'ardh,

    His Throne extends over the heavens and the earth,


    8

    وَلَا يَـــُٔوۡدُهٗ حِفۡظُهُمَا

    wa laa ya'ooduhu hifdhuhumaa,

    and He feels no fatigue in guarding and preserving them.


    9.

    وَهُوَ الۡعَلِىُّ الۡعَظِيۡمُ‏

    wa Huwal-'Aliyyul- 'Adheem.

    And He is the Most High, the Most Great.

    Virtue & Benefits of Ayatul Kursi [Hadith]


    1. Narrated Abu Hurairah: that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "Whoever recites Ha Mim Al-Mu'min - up to - To Him is the return (40:1-3) and Ayat Al-Kursi when he reaches (gets up in) the morning, he will be protected by them until the evening. And whoever recites them when he reaches the evening, he will be protected by them until the morning." 

    Jami` at-Tirmidhi, 2879


    2. Narrated Muhammad bin Sirin: 

    Abu Huraira said, "Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)  put me in charge of the Zakat of Ramadan (i.e. Zakat-ul-Fitr). Someone came to me and started scooping some of the foodstuff of (Zakat) with both hands. I caught him and told him that I would take him to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) ." Then Abu Huraira told the whole narration and added "He (i.e. the thief) said, 'Whenever you go to your bed, recite the Verse of "Al-Kursi" (2:255) for then a guardian from Allah will be guarding you, and Satan will not approach you till dawn.' " On that the Prophet (ﷺ) said, "He told you the truth, though he is a liar, and he (the thief) himself was the Satan."

    3. Narrated Ibn al-Asqa': 

    The Prophet (ﷺ) came to them in the dwelling place of immigrants and a man asked him: Which is the greatest verse of the Qur'an ? The Prophet (ﷺ) replied: Allah, there is no god but He - the Living, the Self-Subsisting Eternal. No slumber can seize Him nor sleep." 

    Sunan Abi Dawud, 4003


    4. Narrated 'Abdullah bin Mas'ud: 

    "Allah has not created in the heavens nor in the earth what is more magnificent than Ayat Al-Kursi." Sufyan said: "Because Ayat Al-Kursi is the Speech of Allah, and Allah's Speech is greater than Allah's creation of the heavens and the earth."

    5. Narrated Abu Umamah (RA): 

    Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said: "Whoever recites Ayat al-Kursi at the end of every obligatory prayer, nothing but death will prevent him from entering Paradise." 

    [An-Nasa'i reported it, and Ibn Hibban graded it Sahih (authentic).
